Pantone Color of the Year 2020: PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue

“Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” (Pantone website)

For the past 20 years, color giant Pantone, known for their Color Matching System used by more than 10 million designers, has released their pick for Color of the Year. This carefully chosen hue will go on to define product development across the design world – from fashion to industrial; home furnishings to product packaging and graphic design.

The selection process is rigorous – and secretive. Each year a selected group of color experts gather at the Pantone Color Institute to discuss color and its role around the world. Before they can make a decision, many factors must be explored including influences from the entertainment and fashion industries, travel habits, art, tangible elements like material and textures, and even concepts of lifestyles and socio-economic conditions. What can impact color, social media influences, and even sports can even sway the discussion toward one color over another.

It’s purported that the colors chosen each year have a connection to the concept known as zeitgeist. Proposed by German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Hegel in the 19th century, zeitgeist is the concept that art, in its most basic nature, reflected the spirit of the age of its creation (Getty Center, 2015). In basic terms, art and culture are inextricably linked and artwork created during a cultural period will reflect that connection.

Pantone seems to employ this concept when choosing their yearly color picks. Leatrice Eisman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, had this to say about the 2020 pick:

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on.”

For 2020, color experts decided on PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue. Touted as a trustworthy shade of blue that calms the soul while feeling familiar. Simple and honest, the Pantone website describes their pick as “suggestive of the sky at dusk...[and] highlight our desires for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.”

In a year full of unforeseen instability and a future of knowns, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is a calming constant that everyone can relate to in some form.
